The purpose of "By the Water's Edge" blog is to share ongoing conservation topics that are important to both members of the Okoboji Protective Association (OPA) and to individuals in general that enjoy the waters of the Iowa Great Lakes chain. My hope is to keep readers informed and at the same time offer folks the chance to also be part of this "blog" dialogue. I am new to blogging, so please bear with me as I learn the process. My wife and I have lived in the lakes area for nearly 40 years, and we have come to treasure all that the area has to offer.
Part of my passion for the outdoors has led to a career in outdoor writing. During this time, I have had the opportunity to meet many great people in conservation - both volunteers and employees in the field. Recently, I was asked by the Publicity Committee of the OPA to help spread the word about what is being done to "Keep our Lakes Alive!" Clean water is vital for all of us, and it is one HUGE challenge. As humans, we are consumers and users of our natural resources. How we use them, how we abuse them, how we protect them determines the future of these natural resources - in this case our water. Hence the title of this blog - "By the Water's Edge."
What makes this so daunting is that the entire watershed for these lakes is over 85,000 acres! Each of us, whether we live on the shores of one of these lakes, in adjacent neighborhoods, in the towns and the rural areas...all of us are part of this equation: how to keep our lakes alive and healthy.
So, for the most part, that will be the topic as we move along on this blog. However, I want to also share other things in the outdoors - anything having to do with enjoying our natural resources. My hope is to try to do a blog at least bi-monthly, hopefully weekly if things work out.
Until next time,
Steve
